An Epic Full Day Itinerary in Oregon Wine Country

Oregon VinoVisit
Oregon is a beautiful wine producing state and has a lot to offer to wine connoisseurs. If you haven’t been there yet, it is time to put it on your wine tasting map. Like any region you visit for the first time, finding the right places to visit can be the difference between an average trip and an unforgettable one.

When staying near Portland, this itinerary should fit perfectly. This city lies between two mountain ranges, the Cascade Range and the lower Coast Range, and is located in the Willamette River Valley, one of the most fertile river valleys.

To make your planning process easy, I mapped out a full day’s itinerary that includes 3 wine tastings and a lunch. Without wasting the entire day in the car, you will be able to visit 3 completely different wineries that show a well-rounded perspective of this fabulous wine country.

Let’s get started!

: Dayton, OR

Duration: 1hr 30min
Price: $65 per person

Let’s start with a bang by visiting one of the most important wineries of the region.

The Winery:
Ken and Grace Evenstad founded Domaine Serene Vineyards and Winery in 1989 when they purchased 42 acres of recently logged land in the Dundee Hills of Oregon. In addition to Pinot Noir, which is about 95% of the wine produced, they also make a little Chardonnay and Syrah. Their wines have won many accolades and awards, including The Best Oregon Pinot Noir by the Wall St Journal, and outstanding (top rating) Oregon producer by Robert Parker.

The Tasting:
Trace the path of their award-winning wines from vine to glass. Learn the intricacies of winemaking in the gravity-flow facility, and discover the history of Domaine Serene. Enjoy an extended tasting, featuring rare and limited-production Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

It’s already 12:30pm and such a delicious tasting must have made you hungry. Lunch break time!

On the Menu: craft sandwiches, salads, soups, pizzas & more.

This is typically the local place to eat in the area. Red Hills Market is ideal if you don’t want to spend hours having your lunch, but still want to treat your palate. Enjoy an inexpensive and delicious farm-to-table meal!

The creative fine dining menus accentuate the native flavors of the valley with a strong influence on seasonal, garden-to-table agriculture. Their affinity for wine pairings allows them to craft well-rounded dining experiences.

The Winery:
Located in the heart of the prestigious Dundee Hills appellation, Lange Estate is the New-world pioneer in the production of Pinot Gris. The year 1987 marked the Langes’ first vintage and consisted of the three varietals they embrace today: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. The Wine Enthusiast proclaimed Lange Estate to be “one of the great Pinot Noir producers in the United States.” Long-standing relationships with blue-ribbon sites have helped the winery establish a well-deserved reputation for consistency and complexity in the wines.
Fun fact: Don Lange, the owner and winemaker, used to be a hippie folk guitarist in the 60’s. Discover one of his songs right here

The Tasting:
This fun, comprehensive experience includes a tour of the winery facility. Tours vary with the season and may include a walk in the vineyard, a tour through the cellar, and barrel sampling. A formal, sit-down tasting of Reserve-level wines, including single vineyard Pinot Noir, will highlight your winery experience.

: Dundee, OR

Duration: 1hr

The Winery:
Crafting elegant, sensuous and age worthy wines for those who view the pairing of wine and food essential to their lifestyle and well-being is what Winderlea is all about. Their focus is on making small lots of Pinot noir and Chardonnay that show the best characteristics of each vineyard. Hand crafted with minimal intervention and the modest use of new French oak barrels, their food friendly wines are classic in style.

The Tasting:
You will be seated in their tasting room with a magnificent view on their vineyards. This tasting flight is typically made up of 5 wines including one Chardonnay and 4 Pinot noirs. A significant portion of the tasting fee is donated to ¡Salud!, an organization that provides healthcare services to Oregon Vineyard workers and their families.
