Madrone Estate Winery is located in the heart of Sonoma Valley in the quaint hamlet of Glen Ellen, about 60 minutes north of San Francisco. With its beautiful contemporary tasting room and spacious outdoor patio, picnic area and bocce court, this winery is a go-to destination for any wine aficionado.
Madrone Estate Winery has roots dating back over 150 years, when pioneering farmers recognized the site for its ideal climate and soils, and began planting grape vines as early as 1863. Over the years, the estate has hosted several owners, including General Mariano G. Vallejo! From 1941 to 2015, the property was named Valley of the Moon Winery, and Valley of the Moon wines are still proudly produced at Madrone Estate. Known for being one of the valley’s most historic wineries today, the Stewart family (current owners) brought back the winery’s original name and embarked upon substantial renovations in order to return the property to its former glory.
Kat Adams has been the winemaker at Madrone for over ten years. She and proprietor Tony Stewart craft wines with an intensity and richness that embody a sense of place. The portfolio includes Italian varietals such as Sangiovese and Barbera along with Estate Grown Old Vine Zinfandels, which are crafted from zinfandel vineyard blocks that are up to 100 years old!
The Tasting Experience
The newly redone tasting room and patio blends a rustic warmth into a modern style. The rich leather armchairs and old oak tables expertly fuse into a light-filled and open space. The impressive stainless steel bar and exposed beams accentuate the “Sonoma-chic” vibe, making your journey to this gorgeous tasting room truly worth your while.
Upon your arrival, you’ll be welcomed with a glass of their crisp Rosé – a refreshing sip on a warm day. The sophisticated interior design reflects the style of the new owners, yet artistic historical details throughout the room such as a huge family tree retracing the winery’s lineage pay homage to the long and vibrant past of the estate.
Adjacent to the tasting room you’ll discover the outdoor area. Here you can freely taste wine in one of the comfy seating areas provided. With only the historic 100-year-old Zinfandel vines surrounding you, the secluded setting of the patio creates a peaceful atmosphere–perfect for relaxing with a glass (or bottle) of wine with friends.
And tucked away at the far end of the backyard is their bocce court. It’s available for play at no charge on a first-come, first-served basis or by reservation. You couldn’t ask for a better way to spend a sunny afternoon with friends.
Madrone Estate Winery offers an Estate Tasting for only $15 per person, during which you will taste five (5) varietals: Chardonnay, Sangiovese, Old Vine Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Red Blend called The Bough, which showcases the winemaker’s style — only 235 cases produced!
For an additional $20/person, you can reserve an artisan cheese plate to enjoy with your wines or opt for the Wine & Cheese Pairing ($30/person) which partners four (4) wines with four (4) kinds of cheese.
Tip: There are several picnic tables on the property to use during your visit. Don’t miss their Acoustic Sundays–a pizza and live music event held on their patio every Sunday during summer!
